Once designed fast
track components can be fabricated off-site, thermally
or acoustically insulated, delivered as a module and
erected speedily to provide a watertight envelope. Alternatively
the component parts, pre-fabricated lightweight steel
frame panels complete with sheathing fitted or pre-fabricated
through wall panels such as Panablock, can be delivered
to site and erected in situ.
Modular buildings are similarly constructed off-site
with the final decorative external finish being applied
prior to or following site installation. ECL have recently
been involved with the two largest modular student accommodation
buildings in Europe, firstly the Royal Northern College
of Music in Manchester followed by Wilmslow Park, Manchester.
The Royal Northern College of Music was the largest
modular building project in Europe when it was undertaken
in 2002. The contract duration was 12 months, with 6
months off site works (factory assembly of units) and
6 months on site works. Approximately 60 - 70% of the
cladding work to the modules was carried out off site
at the assembly factory in Newark. They were then transported
to site for craning into position. The remainder of
the cladding was done on site from scaffold/mast climbers.
The Wilmslow Park project in Manchester became the
largest modular building project in Europe when it commenced
in 2003. The contract duration was 12 months on site.
The vast majority of the work was carried out from mast
climbers once each block of modules were positioned
by crane. These modules were again manufactured off
site.
Whatever the option ECL has the expertise to provide
the most cost-effective solution.
